KATHMANDU: The death toll in a train accident in Maharashtra, India, on Wednesday evening has reached 13.

The incident occurred after panic spread due to rumors of a fire aboard the Pushpak Express, leading passengers to jump off the moving train.

As chaos ensued, some passengers ran across the tracks, where the speeding Karnataka Express, coming from the opposite direction, struck them.

Among the deceased were four Nepali nationals: Lachhiram Pasi, Imtiaz Ali, Babu Khan, and Himu Bishwakarma, as confirmed by Indian media reports.

The Pushpak Express was en route from Lucknow to Mumbai when the incident unfolded in Jalgaon district, northern Maharashtra.

Passengers reportedly pulled the train’s emergency chain and scrambled out, while some jumped off in fear of the rumored fire.

Residents rushed to the site to rescue the injured shortly after the tragedy.
