KATHMANDU: Former Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Uddhav Thapa, was attacked on Saturday evening at Jukekhadhi along the East-West Highway in Kanakai Municipality.

Thapa sustained injuries in the attack, with his eye being affected.

He is currently undergoing treatment at Birtacity Hospital.

The incident occurred while he was returning from the annual general meeting of the Nepal Press Union in Jhapa, held at Domukha.

The altercation reportedly began when the vehicle Thapa was traveling in, a Ba.1.Jha 653, attempted to overtake a Ba.1.Jha 1870 vehicle belonging to Nepal Electricity Authority staff.

Despite Thapa’s security personnel informing the parties about his VIP status, a man punched him during the dispute.

Police have arrested two individuals involved in the assault: 49-year-old Bhakta Bahadur Katuwal of Shivsatakshi Municipality-11 and 42-year-old Prithvi Shrestha of Kanakai Municipality-3.

Both are being held at the Area Police Office in Birtamod.

Nepali Congress Jhapa has strongly condemned the incident.

Party Secretary Navin Bimali demanded legal action against Katuwal and Shrestha, labeling the attack as heinous.

The party announced a press conference to provide further updates on the incident.
