KATHMANDU: Police have detained a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy in connection with the discovery of a newborn’s body in a dustbin in Sarumarani Rural Municipality-2, Pyuthan.

The incident came to light on Thursday morning when the newborn’s body was found in the dustbin.

Using a trained sniffer dog, police intensified the investigation, leading to the arrest of the two teenagers the same night, according to Dipesh Basyal, DSP at the District Police Office, Pyuthan.

A medical report revealed that the baby had been born 5-6 days earlier.

During interrogation, the girl confessed to discarding the newborn. She stated that the baby began crying after birth, and she accidentally caused its death while attempting to silence it.

Further investigation revealed that the girl, originally from Shitganga Municipality in Arghakhanchi, had been living with relatives in Pyuthan.

Her father had passed away, and her mother works in Dubai.

The girl claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy, thinking her weight gain was normal.

Based on her statement, police arrested the boy, a resident of the same rural municipality.

The girl, in poor health and still retaining the placenta, is receiving treatment at District Hospital Bijuwa.

Authorities are conducting further investigations to establish the full details, with additional findings expected from the medical report.

Police have obtained court approval to continue probing the boy’s involvement.

DSP Basyal expressed hope that the investigation will uncover the complete background and motive behind the incident.
