Barhabise Bazaar fire: Over Rs. 20 million property damaged

KATHMANDU: A devastating fire on Wednesday afternoon in Barhabise Bazaar, Sabha Pokhari Rural Municipality-6, caused property damage exceeding Rs. 20 million.

According to police inspector Ram Kumar Lamichhane, the fire destroyed five houses and left 17 individuals displaced.

Fire erupts in Ram Bahadur Rai’s house

The fire began around 2 PM in the home of Ram Bahadur Rai, quickly engulfing neighboring houses made of stone and mud.

Despite no human casualties, residents were unable to save valuables, clothing, or food stored inside their homes.

Fire contained in two hours

The blaze raged for approximately two hours before being brought under control through the concerted efforts of the Nepal Army, police, and local residents. Electricity and communication services were disrupted as a result of the incident.

Relief efforts in full swing

Sabha Pokhari Rural Municipality immediately distributed emergency relief, providing victims with two sets of bedding, kitchen utensils, and food supplies.

The victims, who are now sheltering with relatives and neighbors, also received cash support from multiple sources:

  • District Disaster Management Committee: Rs. 15,000 for each of four families and Rs. 20,000 for one family with more than five members.
  • Nepal Red Cross Society: Tarpaulins, blankets, and kitchenware.
  • Cardamom Business Association: Rs. 55,000.
  • Distributors Association: Rs. 60,500.

Assessment of damage

Inspector Lamichhane confirmed that the fire completely destroyed the homes of Ram Bahadur Rai, Amrita Rai, Lal Singh Limbu, Sushil Tamang, and Nirmala Kalakheti. All five families have been left homeless.

Authorities pledge further support

Assistant Chief District Officer Mohan Mani Ghimire, who visited the site on Thursday, assured additional support for the victims.

The local government and other organizations are committed to continuing relief efforts to help the affected families rebuild their lives.

While the fire caused substantial property damage, the prompt response of authorities and locals helped avert a greater disaster.
