Releasing Rabi could destroy evidence: Prosecutors

KATHMANDU: The detention hearing for Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane is underway at the Kathmandu District Court.
The hearing is being conducted in the bench of Judge Madhav Prasad Adhikari, with government prosecutors presenting their arguments.
The prosecutors have demanded Lamichhane be kept in custody, claiming that he misappropriated funds from a cooperative and should not be allowed to remain free.
The prosecutors argued that releasing Lamichhane could lead to the destruction of evidence.
“There are multiple cases filed against the defendant, including cooperative fraud and money laundering. It is inappropriate to release him at this stage, as doing so could result in evidence tampering,” one prosecutor stated.
According to police investigations, Lamichhane allegedly misappropriated Rs 57.89 million from Swarnalakshmi Multipurpose Cooperative.
Based on these findings, government prosecutors filed a charge sheet demanding compensation for the misappropriated amount.
Following arguments from the complainant’s side, Lamichhane’s legal team will present their defense. Lamichhane appeared in court on Sunday after being accused of embezzling cooperative funds.
The ongoing detention hearing will determine whether Lamichhane will be kept in custody or released.
