Student sustains eye injury in teacher’s beat
The incident occurred during a classroom altercation when the teacher allegedly intervened to stop a fight between students.
KATHMANDU: In West Nawalparasi’s Pratappur, a six-year-old UKG student, Prashant Chaudhary, lost vision in his left eye after being struck by teacher Sanju Chaudhary with a plastic pipe on Dec 3.
The incident occurred during a classroom altercation when the teacher allegedly intervened to stop a fight between students.
The school principal, Sujit Kumar Gupta, stated that the teacher accidentally hit Prashant with a plastic pipe used for classroom activities.
“While teaching, two students got into a fight. The teacher claimed it was unintentional, as she was using a plastic pipe meant for the board,” said Principal Gupta.
After the incident, the school took Prashant to a nearby clinic in Gopiganj Bazaar for treatment. When his condition worsened, his parents took him to hospitals in Parasi, Bhairahawa, and eventually to Tilganga Eye Hospital in Kathmandu.
However, doctors at Tilganga confirmed that the boy’s left eye was permanently damaged.
He now requires two more surgeries and regular follow-ups for a year.
The child’s father, Narendra Chaudhary, filed a police complaint on Jan 1 after prioritizing treatment.
Teacher Still at Large
Despite efforts to locate her, police have yet to apprehend the teacher. “She is not at her residence, and we haven’t been able to trace her yet. We will take her into custody as soon as we find her,” added DSP Bohara.
The case has raised questions about the use of corporal punishment in schools and the accountability of educational institutions in ensuring the safety of students.
