KATHMANDU: Kathmandu, the federal capital, marked the 303rd birth anniversary of King Prithvi Narayan Shah and National Unity Day on Saturday.

A commemorative ceremony was held at the western gate of Singha Durbar, where a statue of King Prithvi Narayan Shah stands.

The event included garlanding the statue of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, with a special tribute paid by the Nepal Army in his honor.

Prithvi Jayanti is celebrated annually on Poush 27 with grandeur in Kathmandu.

King Prithvi Narayan Shah was born on Poush 27, 1779 BS, in Gorkha to King Nara Bhupal Shah and Queen Kausalyawati.

He ascended the throne on Chaitra 25, 1799 BS. Before his reign, Nepal was fragmented into 52 small states.

As king, Prithvi Narayan Shah successfully unified Nepal, extending its borders from the Tista River in the east to the Chepe River in the west.

After his demise, his successors expanded Nepal’s territory further west to the fort of Kangra, leaving a legacy of a unified and strong Nepal.
