KATHMANDU: The Arun-3 Hydropower Project, a 900 MW project under construction in Makalu Rural Municipality of Sankhuwasabha, has completed nearly 80% of its work.

Consequently, around 400 families are set to receive compensation for their acquired land.

The Supreme Court issued a mandamus on Dec 26, directing payment within a month as per the public notice issued by the Sankhuwasabha District Administration Office on 6 April 2023.

At that time, the administration had determined compensation for 524 ropani of land along the 24-kilometer access road from Chhyangkuti to the powerhouse at Rs 1.175 million per ropani.

The Arun-3 Power Development Company Limited promptly deposited Rs 530 million into the administration’s escrow account for the affected families.

Nearly 400 families have been impacted by land acquisition for the project’s access road.

Following the Supreme Court’s directive, a letter has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, confirmed Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Khadka.

The breakthrough of the main tunnel for the Arun-3 Hydropower Project was announced on June 4, 2024, marking the completion of tunnel construction.
