KATHMANDU: As Maghe Sankranti approaches, the wholesale vegetable market at Kalimati in Kathmandu has seen an influx of tarul (yam).

At present, large quantities of yams are being transported from various parts of the country to the capital.

Among the major suppliers, Sarlahi has emerged as the leading region, sending the highest volume of yams to Kathmandu.

In addition to Sarlahi, traders are also receiving shipments from Dhading, Kavre, Makwanpur, Chitwan, Nawalparasi, and even from Dharan and Sunsari.

The current prices at Kalimati Vegetable Market vary depending on the size and variety of the yams.

The prices for a 5 kg bundle range from Rs 250 to Rs 500.

With the festival of Maghe Sankranti just around the corner, the demand for yams has significantly increased, and traders expect the trend to continue, as people prepare for the traditional celebrations where yams is a key ingredient in various dishes.

The wholesale market has been bustling with activity, as the arrival of yams from different regions ensures a steady supply for the upcoming festival.

This surge in trade also reflects the growing importance of the market in facilitating the seasonal distribution of produce across the nation.
