Health Ministry clarifies HMPV as a common virus
The ministry addressed misinformation circulating on various media platforms and social networks, urging the public not to believe such rumors.
KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has clarified that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), reportedly emerging in China, is a common virus, not a new threat.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry addressed misinformation circulating on various media platforms and social networks, urging the public not to believe such rumors.
“It is normal for respiratory infections to rise during winter. Human Metapneumovirus is not a new virus; it has been previously detected in Nepal as a common cause of cold and flu. The country has the necessary capacity and preparedness for its testing, monitoring, and response,” the statement read.
The ministry highlighted that the virus poses a low risk of severe complications.
Vulnerable groups, such as those with weakened immunity, young children, and the elderly, are more likely to be affected.
Nonetheless, increased vigilance and monitoring have been implemented by the Ministry, the Department of Health Services, the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, hospitals, and laboratories.
To prevent the spread of HMPV and other infectious diseases, including Monkeypox, the ministry advised adhering to public health guidelines.
It emphasized wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, maintaining hand hygiene with soap and water, and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
Anyone experiencing health issues is encouraged to seek medical advice from hospitals or consult the ministry’s Hello Health Call Center at 1115.
