KATHMANDU: A 37-year-old man from Hetauda, Makwanpur, Nawaraj Dahal, underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove a failed kidney at Nepal Medical College.

Dahal, who had been suffering from severe left-side back pain for a month, was diagnosed with kidney stones when he sought medical treatment.

After two weeks of increasing pain, a video X-ray revealed kidney stones on his left side, leading to a CT scan, which confirmed that his left kidney was completely damaged.

Consultant Urosurgeon Dr Besh Ansari explained that the initial X-ray showed kidney stones, but the CT scan revealed that the left kidney was beyond repair.

After confirming the complete failure of the kidney, laparoscopic surgery was performed under Dr. Ansari’s guidance to remove the damaged organ. Dahal was able to walk on the third day after surgery and was discharged from the hospital soon after.

Nawaraj’s wife, Geeta Tripathi Dahal, expressed her gratitude towards the medical team, stating, “The doctors quickly diagnosed the problem and performed the surgery. I’m grateful to all the doctors and nurses involved.”

This surgery marks a milestone at Nepal Medical College, as it is possibly the first time a kidney has been removed using laparoscopic technology. The college has increasingly prioritized laparoscopy in various types of surgeries, offering relief to many patients.

Surgeons across all departments are now employing this technique.

Laparoscopic surgery is known to be more effective than traditional open surgery, as it requires only small incisions. This leads to faster recovery, reduced bleeding, shorter hospital stays, and lower chances of infection.

“Laparoscopy is more effective than open surgery. It requires only small incisions, minimizing blood loss and reducing recovery time,” Dr. Ansari affirmed.

Dr. Ansari also stated that laparoscopic surgery can be used for various conditions, including congenital kidney diseases, kidney stones, tumors, cancer, pyleoplasty, kidney trauma, and other abdominal and reproductive issues.

The procedure is proving to be a game-changer for both patients and healthcare providers alike.
