Frequent tremors do not indicate major earthquake risk: Seismologist
They emphasized that it is currently impossible to predict earthquakes.
KATHMANDU: Seismologists have stated that frequent tremors do not necessarily indicate an imminent major earthquake.
They emphasized that it is currently impossible to predict earthquakes.
Dr. Lok Bijay Adhikari, a senior seismologist at the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center under the Department of Mines and Geology, explained that repeated seismic activity does not automatically suggest the immediate threat of a large earthquake.
“It is not possible to forecast earthquakes,” he clarified.
This morning, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake originating in Dingyi County of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region was felt across Kathmandu and eastern parts of Nepal, Dr. Adhikari informed.
“In areas experiencing frequent small tremors, seismic energy tends to accumulate over time. While such regions may have the potential for a major earthquake in the future, predicting when or where it will occur is not yet achievable,” he said.
