KATHMANDU: A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook China’s southwestern Sichuan Autonomous Region early Tuesday morning, prompting President Xi Jinping to issue directives for an all-out rescue operation.
Xi, who also serves as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chair of the Central Military Commission, called for maximum efforts to rescue and treat the injured.
He also emphasized the need for proper resettlement of affected residents.
Premier Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, urged immediate and effective execution of rescue efforts.
Highlighting the cold conditions of the affected plateau region, Li stressed ensuring the basic livelihoods and warmth of the impacted population during winter.
Additionally, Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, a member of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau, has been dispatched to lead a team in the earthquake-hit areas to oversee relief operations.
