KATHMANDU: A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the Xigazê Autonomous Region, China, on Tuesday morning, prompting the temporary closure of the Mount Qomolangma region.
The regional disaster relief headquarters confirmed that the quake has claimed 53 lives and injured 62 people so far.
According to the Dingri Bureau of Culture and Tourism, hotel buildings and surrounding areas near Mount Qomolangma were severely disrupted.
However, all tourists and staff have been reported safe.
The earthquake also caused a power outage at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Qomolangma Station in Dingri.
Local meteorological authorities reported freezing temperatures in the region, ranging from -18°C to below zero, adding to the challenges for rescue and recovery efforts.
