KATHMANDU: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck China’s Xizang region on Tuesday morning, claiming 53 lives and leaving 62 others injured, according to officials.
The tremor occurred at 9:05 a.m. Beijing time in Dingri County, Shigatse City, within the Xizang Autonomous Region.
The death toll was confirmed by Tuesday afternoon.
The quake’s impact was so strong that tremors were reportedly felt in neighboring Nepal.
Emergency response efforts are underway.
