KATHMANDU: A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the city of Sigatse, in the Shigatse Autonomous Region of China, at 9:05 AM local time on Tuesday.
The earthquake has claimed 36 lives, with 38 others injured, according to the regional disaster relief headquarters.
The epicenter was located at a latitude of 28.5°N and longitude of 87.45°E, at a depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by the China Earthquake Network Center.
China’s southwest region is known for frequent seismic activity, with a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province in 2008 claiming the lives of nearly 70,000 people.
The tremor was also felt in Nepal.
