KATHMANDU: A powerful earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, has caused significant damage in Tibet, with human casualties reported.

According to Chinese state media, the earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 9 people in Tibet.

The earthquake, which struck the city of Shigatse, has caused buildings to collapse, forcing people to flee into the streets. Social media footage has shown destroyed shops near the city of Lhasa.

The tremors were felt across several regions, including Nepal, India, and Bhutan. In Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, the earthquake’s impact was strongly felt, and the tremors were also reported in Bihar, India, and Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake struck at around 6:50 AM local time in Nepal, and aftershocks were recorded in the northeastern regions of China, near the Lobuche area in Nepal.

Indian media outlets reported that the earthquake’s effects were felt in parts of West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, and other northern regions of India.

China’s southwest region is known for frequent seismic activity, with a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province in 2008 claiming the lives of nearly 70,000 people.
