Gandaki Province Chief calls for combined efforts to combat human trafficking

KATHMANDU: Chief of Gandaki Province, Dilliraj Bhatta, has said unified efforts are needed to combat modern slavery and trafficking in persons.

During an inauguration of ‘a three-day regional conference against modern slavery and trafficking in persons in South Asia’ organised by the Kopila Nepal today, the Province Chief said human trafficking is a severe social issue and a global issue against humanity.

Stating that girls and women are more vulnerable to human trafficking, he urged both the government and non-government sectors to intervene it and launch public awareness programmes against this.

Province Chief Bhatta stressed the need for collaboration among the government, civil society and all concerned bodies to create a conducive environment for the victims of human trafficking to lead a dignified life.

The Province Chief said that everyone should cooperate in formulating and effectively implementing the policy related to children and gender equality, using the knowledge and experience gained from the conference.

Campaigners working in the social and children’s sector in various countries including neighboring countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are participating in the conference.

In Nepal, the abolition of slavery was announced in 1981 BS, the abolition of all forms of slavery through the Kamaiya Labor Prohibition Act in 2058 BS, and the abolition of Haliya system and the emancipation of the Haruwa-Charuwa community from bonded labour in 2063 BS.
