Myanmar grants amnesty to nearly 6,000 prisoners on 77th Independence Day

KATHMANDU: Myanmar’s State Administration Council announced a general amnesty for nearly 6,000 prisoners on Saturday, marking the country’s 77th Independence Day.

Among those granted amnesty, 5,864 are Myanmar nationals, while 180 are foreign prisoners.

The council has also reduced sentences for some prisoners as part of the initiative.

In comparison, over 9,000 prisoners were pardoned during last year’s 76th Independence Day celebrations.
