Rohit Sharma replaced as captain for Sydney test
Jasprit Bumrah is expected to lead the team, with the toss scheduled for Friday morning at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

KATHMANDU: India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma, is set to be rested for the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
Jasprit Bumrah is expected to lead the team, with the toss scheduled for Friday morning at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Rohit reportedly informed coach Rahul Dravid and selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar of his decision to opt out, which was mutually agreed upon.
This decision could hint at a potential end to Rohit’s Test career, as he may not be a part of India’s plans for the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. India’s chances of reaching the WTC final this cycle are slim.
Shubman Gill, who missed the Melbourne Test, will replace Rohit in the playing XI and is expected to bat at number three. KL Rahul will open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant retains his place in the squad, and pacer Prasidh Krishna is set to replace the injured Avesh Khan.
During a training session on the eve of the match, head coach Dravid was seen in an extended discussion with Bumrah. Rohit had a brief stint in the nets and skipped the regular slip-catching drills, fueling speculation about his absence from the playing XI.
When asked about Rohit’s inclusion, Dravid remained non-committal, saying, “Rohit is fine. We will decide the playing XI after assessing the pitch tomorrow.”
Rohit has struggled with form recently, averaging just 6.2 in his last three Tests in Australia and 10.93 across his last nine Tests.
Under his captaincy, India has faced challenges, including a whitewash against New Zealand at home and defeats in the ongoing series against Australia.
This match is crucial for India, as they aim to level the series 2–2 under Bumrah’s leadership.
The outcome will determine the fate of the series and provide a fresh opportunity for the Indian squad to bounce back.
