KATHMANDU: Manang, a renowned destination globally, is witnessing a significant rise in foreign tourist arrivals.

Although no official record of domestic visitors exists, annual statistics indicate a consistent increase in foreign visitors.

The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) reports that the Annapurna Circuit, considered one of the world’s most challenging trekking routes, remains a top choice for foreign travelers.

In 2024 alone, Manang welcomed 30,866 tourists, comprising 18,499 men, 12,362 women, and 5 others, according to ACAP unit chief Dhak Bahadur Bhujel.

Tourists trekking the Annapurna and Manaslu circuits are registered at Dharapani. Bhujel notes that French nationals top the visitor list, with 3,316 visiting Manang in 2024.

This is followed by 3,006 Israelis, 2,355 Germans, 1,900 UK nationals, and 1,831 Indians.

The region’s pristine Himalayan landscape, towering peaks, and biodiversity attract visitors seeking a glimpse of local culture, cuisine, and scenic beauty.

Bhujel revealed that 22,039 tourists explored Thorong La Pass, Tilicho Lake, and nearby regions, while 8,827 trekked the Manaslu circuit.

Manang experiences two peak tourist seasons: spring (March-May) and autumn (September-December), with the former witnessing the highest influx.

In 2023, 21,247 tourists visited, including 18,083 exploring high-altitude lakes and glaciers and 3,164 trekking the Manaslu circuit.

Comparatively, 2022 saw 15,855 foreign tourists, underscoring the steady recovery post-COVID-19 and the 2021 landslides.

Tourists predominantly traverse the Annapurna Circuit, passing through Thorong La Pass to Mustang and eventually reaching Pokhara.

Manang serves as a gateway to the Annapurna Circuit, starting from Besisahar in Lamjung district. The route connects five districts: Lamjung, Manang, Mustang, Myagdi, and Kaski. Improved road infrastructure now allows vehicles to reach Chame and Khangsar, making access more convenient before beginning the trek.

The ACAP unit highlights increasing visits from citizens of 125 countries, including the USA, Australia, China, Russia, the Netherlands, and Poland, alongside France, Israel, Germany, and India.

The region’s allure lies in its majestic mountains, unique culture, and natural beauty, captivating trekkers and travelers worldwide.
