KATHMANDU: At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured in a horrific attack in New Orleans early Wednesday, the first day of the new year.

A man rammed a pickup truck into a crowd, reportedly inspired by the jihadist group Islamic State (ISIS).

In a televised address, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to the victims and confirmed that the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsuddin Jabbar, had uploaded a video expressing his intent to kill and his allegiance to ISIS.

Authorities revealed Jabbar, a former U.S. military serviceman from Texas, was shot dead in a confrontation with police.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported finding an ISIS flag in the truck used in the attack and has launched a terrorism-related investigation. Officials indicated Jabbar may not have acted alone, with evidence suggesting potential accomplices.

Investigators also discovered possible explosive devices at another location, heightening concerns of further threats.

The tragic event has left the nation in mourning as security agencies work tirelessly to uncover the full scope of the attack.
