Nepal conducts first successful genetic test for breast cancer
According to the Ministry, the NPHL will now provide hereditary breast cancer testing services locally.
KATHMANDU: For the first time in Nepal, hereditary breast cancer testing through gene sequencing has been successfully conducted.
The Ministry of Health and Population announced today that this breakthrough was achieved at the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL).
According to the Ministry, the NPHL will now provide hereditary breast cancer testing services locally.
Previously, samples had to be sent to India for such tests.
The laboratory will conduct these tests using blood and tissue samples. Additionally, the NPHL plans to regularly perform tests for four types of cancer samples.
In India, hereditary breast cancer testing costs around Rs 60,000.
However, the NPHL will provide the same service for Rs 30,000, as confirmed by the Health Minister’s private secretariat.
