KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakashman Singh has highlighted the impacts of climate change on Nepal, stressing the need for development projects to be nature-friendly.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony for the administrative building of Solu Dudhkunda Municipality today, Singh underscored that haphazard development should be avoided, advocating for construction practices that minimize harm to nature.
“Development must be environmentally friendly, as various incidents have taught us important lessons,” Singh said. “To protect villages and localities, we must prioritize the environment.”
He expressed confidence that the administrative building would enhance the municipality’s service delivery, enabling citizens to access services more efficiently.
Recalling his visit to Solukhumbu with his father, Ganeshman Singh, 40 years ago, Singh noted the significant changes in development that the region has undergone since then. He also emphasized that Solukhumbu remains a premier tourist destination in Nepal.
Addressing criticism that governance reforms have not translated into tangible improvements, Singh rejected such narratives as false.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to political stability and economic development, stating that constitutional amendments are underway to further empower citizens.
Namgyal Jangbu Sherpa, Chief of the Municipality, announced that the administrative building, funded internally, would be completed within two years.
Defense Minister Mahabir Rai was also present at the event.
