KATHMANDU: The song “Makhamali” from the upcoming Nepali movie Unko Sweater, set to release on May 9, 2026 (Baisakh 26, 2082), has taken YouTube by storm, securing the top spot on trending charts within just three days of its release.

The song currently holds the top trending position on YouTube in Nepal, and has made waves internationally, reaching the number one spot in Malta, second in Qatar, fifth in Australia and the UAE, and nineteenth in Kuwait.

These countries have significant Nepali diaspora, which indicates a strong global interest in the film’s international release.

Released on Thursday evening, the song has garnered over a million views on YouTube, with millions of users also sharing the video on TikTok and Facebook Reels.

The teaser of the song had already sparked immense interest among viewers, and after the full song was released, it has gained widespread attention.

Director Naveen Chauhan shared that audiences are eagerly awaiting the movie’s release.

The song revives the popular Nepali folk “Kaunda/Chutka” rhythm and artistically portrays the unspoken love between actors Bipin Karki and Miruna Magar.

Set against the cultural backdrop of Faling, a town in eastern Nepal on the Nepal-India border, both the song and its visuals have captivated the audience.

Sujan Chapagain and Sunita Thegim have lent their voices to the song, while the lyrics are written by Hark Saud, with music composed by Sujan Chapagain and produced by Kovid Bajra.

The music video, choreographed by Deep Gurung, also features an intriguing performance by actor Wilson Bikram Rai.

Unko Sweater is the first feature film produced by Artmandu Pvt. Ltd. and is directed by Naveen Chauhan, with co-writing by Suraj Katwal.

The movie stars Bipin Karki, Miruna Magar, Sunil Pokharel, Mao Tse Gurung, Wilson Bikram Rai, Prem Subba, Alex Paras, Parisha Limbu, Suraj Tamu, and Bhavna Khapangi Magar, among others.
