Former Indian PM Manmohan Singh dies at 92

KATHMANDU: Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 due to age-related health complications, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi announced.
Dr. Singh reportedly lost consciousness at his residence earlier in the day and was rushed to AIIMS. The hospital issued a press release stating:
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26, 2024. Resuscitation efforts were initiated immediately at his residence before he was brought to the Emergency Department at AIIMS, New Delhi, at 8:06 PM. Despite all medical interventions, he was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM.”
Singh had stepped down from his role in the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, marking the end of a 33-year-long tenure in the Upper House.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Singh as one of India’s most distinguished leaders. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote:

Rising from modest beginnings, he became a respected economist and held several significant government roles, including Finance Minister, leaving a profound impact on India’s economic policies. BJP President JP Nadda also paid tribute, acknowledging Singh’s contributions as a statesman and economist. In a statement, Nadda remarked:
“The passing of Shri Manmohan Singh Ji is a monumental loss for the nation. He was a visionary leader and an icon of Indian politics, championing the cause of the underprivileged throughout his career. His leadership garnered respect across party lines. His enduring legacy will continue to inspire future generations in their efforts toward nation-building. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
AAP MP Raghav Chadha, reflecting on his personal association with Singh, called him a transformative figure in India’s history.
“Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, a globally renowned economist and the architect of India’s economic liberalization, guided the nation through challenging times with steadfast determination. His leadership during the 1991 reforms ushered India into a new era of progress. I feel fortunate to have worked alongside him in the Rajya Sabha. His legacy will remain an inspiration for generations. My deepest condolences to his family. RIP, Sir. Om Shanti,” Chadha wrote on X.
