Critically injured Rai in sumo accident passes away

KATHMANDU: Durga Prasad Rai, a 72-year-old resident of Fedi in Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality-1, Khotang, succumbed to injuries sustained in a Sumo accident.

The accident occurred on Wednesday at Ranti, Baspani in Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality-3, when the Kathmandu-bound vehicle (Na 1 Ja 7181) lost control and crashed.

Rai, who was critically injured, passed away while undergoing treatment at the District Hospital, Khotang.

Rai was rescued unconscious from the accident site and transported to the hospital via an ambulance provided by the rural municipality.

Despite efforts, doctors were unable to save him due to severe head injuries and multiple fractures, according to Dr. Rupesh Sangroula, the hospital’s chief.

The vehicle, which had been parked on the roadside, began moving on its own and caused the accident.

The driver, 36-year-old Shatrudhan Rai from Aiselukharka Rural Municipality-1, fled the scene but later reported to the Kharmi Police Post.

After being escorted to the District Police Office, Khotang, the driver underwent a health checkup and was placed in custody for investigation, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Prateek Bista.
