BE student fatally stabbed over unpaid dues at Lalitpur cafe
Shortly after leaving, Nayan returned to the café with his friends, leading to a heated argument with Bhatta over the unpaid amount.
KATHMANDU: Nayan Gurung, a 23-year-old engineering student at Himalaya College, was fatally stabbed on Monday night following a dispute over unpaid dues at a café near his college in Chyasal.
Originally from Sunsari and residing in Satdobato, Nayan had just completed his third semester of Bachelor of Engineering (BE).
He and his friends were celebrating the occasion at the nearby “Town Hub” café.
The incident occurred around 9:20 PM as Nayan attempted to settle their bill. Hemraj Bhatta, a 26-year-old café employee, insisted that Nayan clear an outstanding debt from a prior visit.
Nayan, a regular customer at the café for over three years, assured Bhatta that the earlier dues would be paid later and settled only the current bill.
Shortly after leaving, Nayan returned to the café with his friends, leading to a heated argument with Bhatta over the unpaid amount.
The altercation escalated, resulting in Bhatta stabbing Nayan with a knife.
Nayan, critically injured, was rushed to B&B Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
According to SSP Shekhar Khanal of Lalitpur Police, the incident stemmed from the longstanding debt dispute.
Nayan’s body has been sent to Patan Hospital for postmortem, and Bhatt has been taken into custody for further investigation.
Police continue to probe the incident.
