KATHMANDU: Christians in Nepal and around the world are celebrating Christmas Day today, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity.
According to historical accounts, Jesus was born on Dec 25, 2,025 years ago in Bethlehem, Israel.
Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary through the Holy Spirit, is believed to have brought three key blessings: salvation, love, and peace, according to CB Gahatraj, President of the Nepal Christian Federation.
Gahatraj explained that Christians celebrate this day as three distinct occasions: a Day of Love for Jesus’ message of love, a Day of Peace for his efforts to establish harmony, and a Day of Salvation for his promise of spiritual liberation.
Christmas Day has been celebrated as a major festival in Nepal since 2006. From 2006 to 2017, the day was marked by a public holiday.
Between 2018 and 2020, holidays were granted only to Christian adherents, but from 2021 onward, Christmas Day has once again been recognized as a public holiday for all.
The Nepal Christian Federation estimates that there are currently 3.5 million Christians in Nepal, with over 15,000 churches established across the country.
It also notes that all 13 Christian denominations are represented in Nepal.
