Rabi Lamichhane among four presented in court for statement

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane, along with three others, appeared in the Kaski District Court for their statements regarding charges of cooperative fraud, organized crime, and money laundering.

The accused include Chhabilal Joshi, Lila Pachai, and Ram Bahadur Khanal.

Statements began on Monday under the bench of Judge Nitiz Rai, with Chhabilal Joshi’s testimony initiated yesterday but yet to conclude.

Following Joshi’s statement, the other accused will provide their statements, after which a detention hearing will be conducted.

Lamichhane faces charges of embezzling Rs 33.7 million through Suryadarshan Cooperative.

Additionally, a money laundering case involving Rs 278.9 million has been filed against him.

The prosecution seeks to recover the embezzled amount, impose a prison sentence, and confiscate properties held under his and his wife Nikita Poudel’s names. Nikita has also been named a defendant for asset seizure.

The court is expected to decide whether the defendants will remain in custody or be released during the trial.
