Bajura Saturday’s earthquake damages 8 houses, further assessment ongoing

KATHMANDU: A 5.2 magnitude earthquake, centered in Gotri, Jagannath Rural Municipality, struck Bajura district early Saturday morning, causing significant damage to property.

According to data gathered by security personnel deployed in all nine local units, eight houses were completely destroyed, while several others suffered partial damage.

The Bajura District Police Office reported that in Budhinanda Municipality-2, Kalpana Budha’s two-story house collapsed, while houses belonging to Janak Bohara in Ward 4 and Padam Sarki in Ward 9 (Pandusain) were also completely damaged.

In Ward 3 of the same municipality, partial damage was recorded in the homes of Dhani Bohara, Saimal Rokaya, Ghanshyam Budha, Tine Chadara, and Man Singh Thapa.

The Kailash Guest House in the area also sustained damage.

Similarly, Janak Bahadur Bohara, Information Officer at the District Police Office, reported damages in Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality-1. Homes belonging to Dasharath BK, Anand BK, Chamfe BK, and Man BK were affected.

In Gotri, the epicenter of the quake, Ward Office data revealed that 123 families are at risk.

The Ward 5 Office has recommended immediate assistance to the District Disaster Management Committee, according to Acting Chief District Officer Rupak Mandal. Efforts to verify the data from alternative sources are ongoing.

Damage assessments from other municipalities are being collected through local police stations.

Residents have urged the local government to provide immediate relief and protection against the cold.

Civil society leader Dirgharaj Padhyaya called for the urgent distribution of essential relief materials to those affected.
