KATHMANDU: Qatar has officially reopened its embassy in Syria’s capital, Damascus, on Saturday.
For the first time in 13 years, Qatar’s flag was hoisted at the embassy complex near the Upper Abu Rummaneh area in Damascus.
The diplomatic mission had been closed since the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011.
The reopening comes amidst a wave of regional and Western diplomats visiting Syria following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government on Dec 8.
A Qatari delegation met with representatives of Syria’s transitional government, reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people in areas of security, peace, development, and prosperity, according to Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari.
Al Ansari also noted that the discussions focused on improving the flow of Qatari humanitarian aid to Syria and assessing the urgent needs of the Syrian population at this critical stage.
Qatar becomes the second country after Turkey to officially resume diplomatic activities in Syria’s capital following Assad’s downfall.
