All six local levels, including five rural municipalities in the district, have adopted potato as a cash crop for commercial farming.
The Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Myagdi has supported this initiative by providing grants to farmers under a community-level potato promotion program.
Sanjib Bastola, Chief of the Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Myagdi, reported that around 850 ropani of land is now dedicated to commercial potato farming by 21 farmers’ groups and cooperatives.
Additionally, preparations are underway to cultivate potatoes on 300 ropani during the upcoming rainy season.
To support this initiative, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative of Gandaki Province has allocated Rs 12 million for the current fiscal year.
The province government launched the program last year to encourage farmers to adopt potato farming and make the district self-sufficient in potato production.
