Itahari Municipality shuts down mill for mixing rice grains with turmeric
The inspection team found the adulteration in action, immediately halting the mill’s operation.
KATHMANDU: Itahari Municipality has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a mill and trader for mixing substandard rice grains with turmeric powder at Megha Grinding Mill in Itahari-8.
During an inspection by the Consumer Protection Branch of the municipality, it was discovered that the mill was producing low-quality turmeric by mixing it with rice grains.
The inspection team found the adulteration in action, immediately halting the mill’s operation.
A total of 180 kilograms of mixed turmeric, including the adulterated product, was seized during the raid.
The team also locked the mill premises.
According to Food Inspector Anu Aryal of Itahari Municipality, adulterating and selling such products is illegal.
After the discovery of the rice husk mixture in turmeric, a fine was imposed, and the mill was sealed.
Aryal confirmed that the mill operator has paid the fine, after which the lock on the facility was lifted.
