ISLAMABAD: Four Pakistani nationals were killed in Saturday’s boat capsizing incidents off the island of Crete in southern Greece, Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch has confirmed in a statement.
“We announce with deep sorrow that, as per the latest information shared by the Greek authorities, four Pakistani nationals have been identified among the dead in Saturday’s incidents of capsized boats in the south of Crete Island of Greece,” Baloch said on Monday.
Pakistan’s mission in Athens is in constant contact with Greek authorities to assist survivors and facilitate the repatriation of the deceased, she added.
Earlier, the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the rescue of 47 Pakistani nationals from the site of the capsized boats off the coast of Greece.
The ministry also stated that while the search operation is ongoing, there may be additional casualties.
Greece has been a key entry point for irregular migrants and refugees attempting to enter the European Union since 2015.
More than 1 million arrivals have been recorded since then, but the perilous journey has claimed hundreds of lives at sea.
