KATHMANDU: Mechinagar municipality in the district has launched a 15-day campaign to identify differently able persons and provide them identity cards.

The campaign is launched along with health camps in the municipality.

Minister for Drinking Water, Irrigation and Energy in province, Ekraj Karki, inaugurated the drive amidst a programme at Bahundangi of Mechinagar-1 on Monday.

The health camp is organized with the support of Karuna Foundation and the local level so that province government would identify the people living with disability and run programmes accordingly, according to him.

The identity cards will be distributed to minorities from the camps conducted in all 15 wards across the municipality. Specialized doctors, health workers and government employees have been mobilized in the camps, according to chief administrative officer, Agni Prasad Adhikari.

Municipality mayor Gopal Chandra Budhathoki expressed belief that the camp would convenience the differently able persons to receive State entitlements.

For this programme an agreement of Rs 14.2 million was made among Mechinagar municipality, Koshi Province government and the Karuna Foundation.

The scheme is aimed at improving infants’ health, ensuring quality life to the disabled persons with their access to education and social activities, empowering households, and strengthening local administration and management, according to deputy mayor Mina Upreti.

Out of total 27,000 persons living with disability in Mechinagar, only 1,744 persons have been recorded.
