Singh, an 88-year-old veteran leader, passed away at 1:00 AM last night in Chaksibari, Kathmandu.
KATHMANDU: Former Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Prem Lal (P.L.) Singh was laid to rest following his demise.
Singh, an 88-year-old veteran leader, passed away at 1:00 AM last night in Chaksibari, Kathmandu.
A former Central Committee member of the Nepali Congress and Minister of Population and Environment, Singh was known for his close association with Ganesh Man Singh, the esteemed leader and “Iron Man” of Nepal’s democratic movement.
During his involvement in Nepal’s democratic struggle, Singh endured multiple imprisonments and was forced into exile in India.
After the restoration of democracy, he was elected the first mayor of Kathmandu Municipality in 1992 through the local elections representing the Nepali Congress.
It was under Singh’s leadership that Kathmandu Municipality was officially declared a Metropolitan City in 1995.
In 1999, Singh became a member of the Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress.
He played a crucial role in party organization and contributed significantly to Nepal’s democratic movements.
The Nepali Congress noted that his active contributions will be forever remembered in the party’s history.
