Tamil Nadu hospital fire kills 6, injures 30
The cause is under investigation.
KATHMANDU: A fire broke out late Thursday night at a private hospital in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, leading to the deaths of six people and injuring 30 others, police confirmed.
The injured are reported to be in stable condition.
The blaze erupted around 9 PM in the reception area of City Ortho Hospital, located along the Dindigul-Trichy National Highway. Flames and thick smoke rapidly spread throughout the facility, trapping patients and staff.
Rescue operations faced immense challenges as nearly 100 people needed to be evacuated from the smoke-filled building.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as rescue teams worked tirelessly to bring people to safety.
Tragically, five individuals were found unconscious in an elevator on the ground floor and later succumbed to suffocation.
The victims were identified as Suruli (50) and his wife Subbulakshmi (45) from Theni district; Mariammal (50) and her son Mani Murugan (28); Rajasekar (35); and a six-year-old girl, all residents of Dindigul district. Their bodies were sent to Dindigul Medical College Hospital for postmortem examinations.
Authorities believe a short circuit may have triggered the fire. Investigations are ongoing to confirm the cause of the blaze and to determine if safety regulations were violated.
