FDB to digitize 10 classic films, including Numafung
The first phase of digitization has focused on films made under the royal Nepalese Film Institute and the Ministry of Information.
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Film Development Board (FDB) has announced plans to digitize 10 films, including Numafung.
Board Chair Dinesh DC stated that films like Basanti, Balidan, Daksina, Basai, and Bir Ganeshman will be transformed into current technology to preserve them for future generations and archived for long-term access.
“We aim to convert these films, which are not only popular with audiences but also reflect various periods, into modern formats. The work will begin soon, and these films will be showcased in a special event organized by the board,” Chair DC said.
Previously, the board digitized key films made using ‘celluloid’ technology, including Aama, Ke Ghar Ke Dera, Badlindo Aakash, Jeevanrekha, Sindoor, Kumari, Manko Baadh, Parivartan, Hijo Aaja Bholi and Shantideep.
English subtitles were also added to these films.
During the restoration process, any damage such as reel wear, holes, or tears is meticulously repaired to restore each frame to its best quality before being transferred to a digital format for archiving.
The first phase of digitization has focused on films made under the royal Nepalese Film Institute and the Ministry of Information.
After digitization, these films, originally shot in 16mm and 35mm formats, will be available in 2K and 4K resolutions.
“With digitization, these films’ prints will be restored, and it will be possible to upgrade them to 8K or other higher quality formats,” Chairman DC added.
