KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has ordered the release of businessman Durga Prasai on bail.
The bench of Judge Bishnu Prasad Awasthi on Thursday ruled that Prasai be released on a bail amount of Rs 40,000.
Prasai was arrested by the Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau after spreading alleged misinformation claiming that Prime Minister KP Oli had investments in Cambodia.
A case was subsequently registered against him.
Following the completion of the police investigation on cybercrime, a charge was filed, and a detention hearing was held on Thursday.
After the hearing, the judge ordered his release on bail.
The government attorney had sought punishment under Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008. However, the court decided to release Prasai on bail.
Despite the court’s decision, Prasai will not be immediately released, as he is also under investigation for organized crime and unlawful financial gain.
Prasai was arrested from his residence on Nov 19.
In his statement, Prasai claimed he did not create the document alleging PM Oli’s investment in Cambodia.
He said the document was sent to him by a Nepali residing in Cambodia.
Prasai further stated that he spoke based on information provided over the phone by the same individual in Cambodia.
