TOKYO: A freight train derailed on the JR Kagoshima main line in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima prefecture on Thursday, causing no injuries and disrupting train operations in the area.

The derailment occurred at around 3 a.m. local time as the 12-car train, including one locomotive and 11 freight cars, was traveling from Kumamoto Marshalling Yard to Kagoshima Station, the national broadcaster NHK reported.

JR Kyushu has suspended operations on both directions of the Kagoshima main line between Kawauchi Station and Kumanoshiro Station for the entire day. Officials estimated it will take considerable time to restore normal service.

In response to the accident, two investigators from the Japan Transport Safety Board will arrive at the scene in the afternoon to investigate the cause of the derailment.
