KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has ordered the remand of the accused, Jhankri Prakash Bhujel, to custody pending trial in a high-profile vehicular manslaughter case.

Judge Khemraj Bhatta’s bench made the decision on Sunday.

According to Kathmandu District Police, Bhujel was arrested in connection with a vehicular manslaughter incident.

The court subsequently issued an order to detain him pending trial.

The incident occurred on Nov 13 in Shankharapur, Kathmandu, when a car driven by Bhujel (license plate: Ba 19 Pa 2605) struck a motorcycle (Bagmati Province 02-018 Pa 6875).

The crash severely injured Narayan Nagarkoti (38) and his wife, Kisanu Maya Nagarkoti, residents of Kageshwari Manohara Municipality-2.

Both victims succumbed to their injuries during treatment at Grande Hospital.

They were initially taken to a local hospital in Shankharapur before being transferred to Grande Hospital, where they passed away the following day.

After the accident, Bhujel fled the scene, abandoning his vehicle, but later surrendered at the Bouddha Police Station.

The police detained him and conducted a thorough investigation.

The victims’ family initially refused to accept the bodies, demanding financial compensation.

After Bhujel provided financial support to the bereaved family, the bodies were handed over for post-mortem and subsequent funeral rites.

Anil Nagarkoti, a relative of the deceased, filed the complaint against Bhujel for vehicular manslaughter.

The court’s decision to remand Bhujel to custody comes 25 days after the investigation began.

Two children survive the deceased couple.
