KATHMANDU: An unknown disease has claimed the lives of 71 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Health Minister Roger Kamba stated that the government is on high alert following the death toll.

The disease was first detected in the Congo province, in the southwestern Panji area, and has been declared an epidemic by Congo authorities. The symptoms are reported to be similar to those of the flu.

So far, 71 people have died, including 27 from health institutions and 44 from local communities.

Around 300 people have recovered from the disease.
