KATHMANDU: A newly elected ward chairperson in Saptari was arrested on Sunday following the local by-election.

Ghiringendra Kumar Sah, the newly elected chairperson of Dhaneshwari Municipality-1, was taken into custody while attempting to take the oath of office.

Sah was arrested by the police on Thursday during a ceremony held at the ward office to mark his inauguration.

He faces charges of involvement in the murders of two individuals and is under investigation for a manslaughter case. Sah contested the election as a candidate of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal and won the ward chairmanship.

He was arrested on allegations of murdering a local woman and kidnapping her brother.

The arrest was confirmed by the Saptari District Police Office, stating that Sah was detained from the stage at the inauguration event.

He is currently being held at the Kalyanpur Area Police Office.

In the by-election held on Dec 1, Sah secured 652 votes and emerged victorious as the ward chairperson from the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal.
