FNJ draws attention to Harka Sampang’s threats against journalists
Mayor Sampang threatened Janak Rishi Rai, the FNJ Chair of Sunsari, and Gopal Dahal, a member of the FNJ National Council, over a news report.
KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed concern over a recent incident in which the mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, Harka Sampang, allegedly threatened journalists via social media.
Mayor Sampang threatened Janak Rishi Rai, the FNJ Chair of Sunsari, and Gopal Dahal, a member of the FNJ National Council, over a news report.
In a statement issued by FNJ General Secretary Roshan Puri, it was stated, “While there are established provisions to take legal action or file a complaint with the Press Council Nepal if dissatisfied with a report, such actions by a responsible public figure like the mayor are not only condemnable but also an assault on press freedom.”
The federation further noted that this behavior discourages journalists from their profession and threatens the right to freedom of thought and expression.
The FNJ has called on relevant authorities to respect the constitutional rights of the press and to create an environment that prevents such incidents from recurring.
