KATHMANDU: The case of Mamata Kafle, a Nepali nurse murdered in the United States, has taken a significant turn.

Her husband, Naresh Bhatta, has been formally charged with her murder and concealing her body. The case is set for a court hearing soon.

Naresh, a former U.S. Army serviceman, has been in police custody since July 30, following accusations that he killed Mamata.

According to initial investigations, DNA tests confirmed that blood found in a room in their house belonged to Mamata, providing critical evidence of her murder.

Despite confirmation of her death, Mamata’s body has yet to be recovered. Mario Lugo, the Chief of Manassas Park Police, stated that the case was suspected to be a homicide from the beginning. DNA results and other evidence have strengthened this belief.

Mamata, who worked as a nurse at Prince William Medical Center, was last seen at work on July 27. Concerned colleagues reported her missing after she failed to report for her shifts.

On August 2, police searched Mamata and Naresh’s residence. During questioning, Naresh claimed to have last seen Mamata on July 31.

However, further investigation led to his arrest on August 22 on charges related to her disappearance.

After months of investigation, sufficient evidence was presented to formally charge Naresh with Mamata’s murder and the concealment of her body.

An official indictment is scheduled for Wednesday, with police vowing to continue their search for Mamata’s remains.

This incident has deeply saddened and alarmed the Nepali community, both in the U.S. and abroad.

Many now look to the court proceedings for justice and closure in this harrowing case.
