KATHMANDU: By-elections are being held on Sunday to fill 41 vacant positions in local levels across Nepal.

Voting is underway for one chief, one deputy chief, two rural municipality chairs, four vice chairs, and 33 ward chairs.

The Election Commission reported a 61% voter turnout as of 4 PM, according to spokesperson Nita Pokhrel Aryal, speaking to Makalu Khabar.

By 5 PM, a total of 226,799 voters are expected to have cast their votes.

The by-election features 376 candidates, including representatives from 20 political parties and independent contenders.

The Commission designated 162 polling stations and 293 polling centers for the election.

The results of the by-elections are expected to be announced within two days.
