Veteran actresses make a strong comeback to the screen after a decade

KATHMANDU: Several actresses, who had been away from acting, have made their return to the big screen and TV shows this year.

These actresses, including Puja Chand, Bipana Thapa, and Regina Upreti, who were once frequently seen in films, are reconnecting with their audience after a decade.

Despite disappearing from the screen due to changes in film presentation and narrative style, they have successfully made a comeback in movies.

Actress Regina Upreti, who was last seen in the 2013 film Bardan, made her return this year with the film Modibeni, which was released in Shrawan. She had distanced herself from the film industry, especially with the rise of digital technology in filmmaking. However, her return coincides with a resurgence of older actresses making their way back to the big screen.

Bipana Thapa, through her performance in Hraswa Deergha, which was released on Nov 15, marked her return to the big screen after a long hiatus. She mentioned that although she had planned to return earlier, the right circumstances gave her the courage to come back. “I had stayed away from the industry due to family reasons, but now I’m back in action. This time, working on a film felt like my first,” said actress Thapa. She also acknowledged the shift in the industry, saying, “Once, we used to be seen in leading roles, but now we often take on supporting roles. The impact of our characters should be felt within the overall story. I’m now focused on continuing my acting career.”

Actress Puja Chand also made a successful comeback with her role in the movie Tel Visa, which began screening on Nov 22. Her performance, particularly as the wife of actor Bipin Karki, has garnered positive feedback from both viewers and film professionals. This has led to speculation that she may be seen in more roles in upcoming films. In the same movie, actress Richa Ghimire returned not only as an actress but also as a producer.

Richa Ghimire shared, “I went abroad due to various reasons related to the film industry. The lifestyle and environment there delayed my return. But now, I’m back in filmmaking, and I plan to continue with it.” Actress Arunima Lamsal, who has been residing in the United States, is also making her comeback through the web series Ghar: But in America.
