Disaster preparedness can minimize losses: CM Karki
He highlighted the importance of effective pre-disaster planning, even if complete disaster control is not possible.
KATHMANDU: Koshi State Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has stressed that disaster preparedness can significantly reduce damage and protect the lives and property of the people.
Speaking at a fire control equipment handover program organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law today, he highlighted the importance of effective pre-disaster planning, even if complete disaster control is not possible.
During the event, Chief Minister Karki handed over fire control equipment worth Rs 1,717,820 to Shumbh Subedi, Chief of the Armed Police Force Barah Battalion, Pakali, Sunsari. The equipment comprises seven types of fire control tools.
He expressed confidence that such preparedness measures would help control incidents in remote areas and prevent significant loss of life and property. He further added that the government is committed to ensuring public participation in disaster management initiatives.
Chief Minister Karki also announced plans to relocate settlements in areas prone to floods and landslides, in coordination with local municipalities, before the end of May next year.
Highlighting potential challenges during the winter, he directed the ministry to prepare measures to protect citizens from cold waves in the Terai region. Additionally, he called for coordinated efforts among all three tiers of government to control road accidents, which continue to result in significant human and material losses.
Shumbh Subedi, Chief of the Barah Battalion, expressed hope that the newly received equipment would enhance fire control efforts.
Meanwhile, Acting Secretary of the Ministry, Kamal Thapa, revealed plans to provide disaster management equipment worth NPR 15 million each to Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force within this fiscal year.
