ADB aid reconstruction of KVIWSS
Designed to enhance water supply in the historic towns of Banepa, Panauti, and Dhulikhel, the project faced significant setbacks as it neared completion.
KATHMANDU: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed to assisting in the reconstruction of the Kavre Valley Integrated Water Supply Scheme (KVIWSS), which was severely damaged by floods and landslides following heavy rainfall on Sept 27 and 28.
Designed to enhance water supply in the historic towns of Banepa, Panauti, and Dhulikhel, the project faced significant setbacks as it neared completion.
Key infrastructure, including the water intake, storage tanks, distribution mains, and branch pipes, suffered damages amounting to an estimated Rs 218 million.
The ADB’s support was confirmed during a meeting on Monday between ADB Nepal Country Director Arnaud Cauchois and representatives of KVIWSS, including Board Chair and Dhulikhel Mayor Ashok Byanju. Following discussions, the ADB pledged to finance the reconstruction and assist with preparing a detailed project report.
Mayor Byanju expressed optimism, emphasizing the importance of restoring the project, which aims to provide 24-hour water access to over 140,000 residents across the three towns. Launched in 2012, the Rs 990.8 million scheme (excluding VAT) is a critical initiative to address long-standing water supply challenges in the region and is projected for completion in 2024.
